Rules for in-text citation
In-text citations for translated chapters reprinted in edited books also follow the same regulations as other Harvard references. The citation always indicates the original author and original publication year, and not the year of republication.
Parenthetical
The parenthetical style places the year and author in round brackets at the end of a sentence.
Example | (Bakhtin, 1929) |
Structure | (Chapter Author Surname, Year) |
Narrative
The narrative structure combines the author within the sentence, followed by the year in round brackets.
Example | Aristotle (350 BCE) |
Structure | Chapter Author Surname (Year) |

Always Mention the Translator – Even if the translator is well known or the translation is regular, always mention their name following the words “Translated by”. This is to appreciate their work and steer clear of plagiarism problems. Use the Year of Original Publication in In-Text Citations – The in-text citation is always to be the year of original publication of the chapter, and never the year of republication. This preserves historical context and accuracy. Include All Editors – In case a book is being reprinted with two or more editors, include all of them in the reference. Use “(eds.)” in case there are multiple editors. This gives readers ways of identification of the exact edition and volume. Always Include Page Numbers for Chapters – Provide the actual page range of the chapter in the republished book. This enables readers to find the actual content and is most useful where edited volumes contain chapters that extend over multiple topics. |
